Spotlight: 360° Virtual Tour of Universiti Teknologi Petronas

Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) is a private university in Perak, Malaysia offering degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The institution is also known for its leading-edge research facilities, focusing on oil and gas, as well as energy sectors.

UTP appointed us to create a virtual tour for their campus, to highlight their award-winning architecture, laboratories and world-class facilities. We designed a custom look for the virtual tour with three main categories: Academic, Research, and Campus Life.

Custom University-Focused Interface

Throughout our intensive shooting session, we covered every key location within the 1,000 acre site, including ground photography and aerial views. Our images are taken in 9 – 11K and are optimised using smart compression to enable them to run smoothly in the virtual tour.

A click on the custom hotspot opens up the panorama, with a classification and information pop up beneath each title. Prospective students can also click on the next and previous button to go through each image.

We also designed a unique interface consisting of the primary call to actions at the bottom right hand corner, and a drop down menu with the classification of all panoramas. This gives it a clean look while still highlighting the different categories for University Teknologi Petronas.

Eye-Capturing Timelapse and Avatar

Chancellor Complex is the signature centrepiece of the campus, an award-winning architectural marvel designed by Lord Norman Foster from Foster & Partners. To emphasise the spectacular building, we used a timelapse panorama that allows viewers to admire it in the day and night, both equally beautiful in their own rights.

Not only does the scene give a sense of how beautiful the campus is, it leaves an impression from the very moment you step into the virtual campus.

Selected panoramas also feature an avatar of a real person – in this case, their Vice Chancellor – who would welcome prospective students and their parents to the virtual tour, followed by introductions to the the campus areas. An eye-catching way to engage with a tech-savvy audience!

Motion in 360°

Another element that even special is the 360° video opening at the start of UTP’s virtual tour. The dynamic scenes capture glimpses of the university, paired with an inspiring narration of why students should study at UTP. Use your curser or finger to view the campus in 360°!

Content Management System

UTP required a Central Management System (CMS) that allows their team to manage and modify their information easily and effectively. Through the virtual tour, they can access the backend to add and change their content to fit information updates independently.

Neighbourhood Guide

Actsugi has the largest database of virtual tours for travel destinations and tourist attractions. Since university life is not just about the academic courses and campus facilities, our signature Neighbourhood Guide lets prospects see some of the nearby attractions that they can visit during their time in UTP (or in Malaysia, for international students).
