With its unconventional design-led approach reminiscent of W Hotels across the world, the luxury hotel has a reputation to uphold. Colourful LED lighting and bold decor are to be expected. Yet under its whimsical facade lies a unique kind of urban sophistication, and it is this that we wanted to incorporated in their virtual tour.

Putting the W in Wow

It is one thing to take great visual content; it is another to tell a story with it. While capturing the hotel spaces with 11K high-definition photography, we worked closely with the client to ensure that every detail is perfectly in place.

From scheduling the best times with the right lighting, to finding the most strategic angles, and liaising with the models, each stunning imagery is crafted to convey the brand story.

The Wet Deck has one of the city's best-kept city sceneries. By day, the swimming pool is lively with families and guests taking the plunge in the cool waters. By night, city dwellers flock to the open-air pool bar, purple lights are aglow and the Petronas Twin Towers offers a glistening sight to behold. This juxtaposition is best shown through a timelapse panorama, where the captivating scene would melt between the day and night in one sweeping view.

The whole photography process for the timelapse took hours just to ensure the best lighting and fewer crowds coming to close to the shot. To protect the privacy of guests, we also blurred out their faces.

W Kuala Lumpur is intricately designed with creative decor, including curated art pieces by Gallery des Artistes. To truly bring this point across, both the indoor and outdoor images underwent professional post production to be equally sharp, and the colours kept true to its original vibrant hues.

Design-led and Dynamic

Most brands shy away from out-of-the-ordinary elements, but that's not what W Kuala Lumpur embodies, and certainly not Actsugi. One of the more challenging aspects of photographing this hotel is its love for mirrors and bold patterns in almost every room.

The hotel puts a modernist twist on the beloved Malaysian batik, with bright pixel and geometrical prints. The polka dot carpet designs are apparently an abstract interpretation of the city topography. The mirrors add a dizzying sense of space in the already generously-sized rooms.

For some virtual tour creators, this can be a limitation. It requires the photographer find the angle to conceal their equipment from reflective surfaces, at the cost of forgoing better angles. Likewise, the common solution for floors and carpets with unusual patterns would be to place a tripod cap.

But we embrace challenges like this. Every interior design in the space has its purpose, so how could we not showcase W Kuala Lumpur in its most impressive form? We carefully took out all the unwanted reflections, and ensured that tripods are completely and seamlessly removed from every image.

The hospitality style fits the W personality - friendly, quicky and professional. We worked with the team to have their staff members in the scenes, such as the chefs preparing the breakfast buffet at the Flock, and the bartenders shaking up a drink at WooBar and WetDeck.
