During the 14th century, Negeri Sembilan was divided into nine states, hence its name literally translates into ‘nine states’. These were mostly inhabited by the Minangkabau people from West Sumatra, whose cultures seeped into the unique traditions of the state. Unlike other states, it has a unique tradition called Adat Perpatih. Parts of old Negeri Sembilan were later joined with neighbouring states like Melaka and Selangor.
