While studying architecture in Taiwan, Soon Yong was inspired by the way his teacher promoted education and cultural preservation through a reading space. Upon returning to his hometown, he and his friends channelled their passion towards a heart-warming community project by building The Little Giraffe Book Club. Since then, they have organised activities and cultural events to excite the neighbourhood.

The Story of Little Giraffe Book Club


Hidden in a small village of Cheras is a charming space, library and cafe that brings the community together.


Little Giraffe Book Club was started by kindergarten teachers and mothers with a vision to give children a place to read. Back then, the library was set up in a mobile container.


As it grew, a team of architecture graduates decided to transform an old kampung house into a thriving communal space. With help from locals who contributed their time, raw materials and funds, this became a reality.


There is a Stage at the front of the house, which hosts storytelling sessions, craft sessions, and performances for families to enjoy. The Library is right next to it, filled with Chinese, English and Malay books to foster reading among children.


If you feel hungry, head over to Little Moments Café, a relaxing café which dishes up hearty mains, desserts, coffee and special rojak. Surrounded by vintage décor and serenaded by laidback music, a visit to Little Giraffe Book Club is like stepping into the pages of a book.



Fun Facts :
• The namesake is inspired by the giraffe’s ability to stand high and see far. Children also love animals!
• Locals from the neighbourhood are brought in as their kitchen staff and servers
• Family-fun activities like performances, film nights, and storytelling sessions take place every week
• On 9 September each year, a local street festival is held to celebrate Mooncake Festival. This annual initiative was started by Little Giraffe Book Club since 2017.
